Heading into the MLB offseason, there were many questions swirling around about what Brian Cashman and the New York Yankees would be able to do.

One thing was clear, which was the fact that re-signing star outfielder Cody Bellinger was the team’s top priority. However, there were many hoping to see the Yankees get aggressive adding outside talent.

So far this offseason, New York has opted against that strategy. Cashman seems comfortable making depth additions rather than shaking up the roster. He has refrained from making blockbuster moves, outside of re-signing Bellinger to a long-term five-year, $162.5 million contract.

Freddy Peralta was a name of interest in the MLB rumor mill, but the Yankees watched him get traded to the New York Mets instead. Kyle Tucker and Bo Bichette were rumored as potential options, but Cashman opted against trying to bring them in.

Fans have been frustrated with New York’s lack of outside roster movement. Despite that frustration, the Yankees feel that they are legitimate World Series contenders.

Keeping that in mind, fans have been given another reason to be excited about the upcoming 2026 season.

Jeff Joyce of MLB Network Radio spoke out with a strong opinion about the team. He believes that New York is indeed a World Series contender despite the lack of aggressive outside additions.

“I know that everyone’s down on the Yankees, but going into this season, if [Gerrit] Cole and [Carlos] Rodón come back healthy, they’ve probably got the best rotation they’ve had in a while, as far as postseason potential,” Joyce said.

“Lineup-wise, they feel like they’ve got more pieces around [Aaron] Judge than they’ve had in a while, even though it still feels a little bit short going down. So I will still call them a contending team, a championship-caliber team.”

While he’s high on the Yankees’ chances of competing for a championship, Joyce did admit that he would like to see Cashman focus on making one more move.

“I’d like to see one bat added, because the left side of the infield doesn’t excite me. But I do feel like the last couple of years have at least been better, and given them a better opportunity than they were doing more in the earlier 2020s, 2021 through 2023.”

It will be interesting to see what the 2026 season has in store for New York. Depending on the start of the year, the Yankees could look to add more talent ahead of the MLB trade deadline.

That being said, Cashman might be right. New York might well be a World Series contender already.
