James “Jimmy” Biggica, a talented craftsman and martial artist, was born and raised on Staten Island before relocating to the Pocono Mountains in October 2002. Beginning his martial arts training at age 10 at a Goju Karate dojo in South Beach, Jimmy became a lifelong student of martial arts philosophy, particularly Jeet Kune Do and Wing Chun. He taught himself to build Wing Chun wooden dummies, combining woodworking skills inherited from his father, Donald, with the artistic sensibility of his mother, Carol. His craftsmanship led him to found Warrior Martial Art Supply, through which he hand-carved and personalized Wing Chun dummies for customers worldwide, including Africa and Japan. Jimmy is survived by his parents, Donald and Carol; his sister, Sharon; twin nieces, Liliana and Olivia; and brother-in-law, Lou. Visitation will be held at Casey Funeral Home on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Holy Rosary Church on Monday, Feb. 2, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., followed by burial at Moravian Cemetery. Joan H. Frederick, 93, died on Jan. 30, 2026, at home surrounded by her children. Born to Helen and James Hasson, Joan grew up in West Brighton and trained at Flower and Fifth Avenue Hospitals Nursing School in Manhattan. She met her husband, William C. Frederick, MD, at Bellevue Hospital, and they married on June 10, 1956, at Sacred Heart Church, sharing 57 years together until his death in 2013. Joan worked with the Visiting Nurse Service on Staten Island, caring for immigrant families in South Beach. She and Bill raised six children and delighted in their 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Joan volunteered at St. Vincent’s Medical Center and enjoyed golf and bridge with lifelong friends. She is survived by her children Gail, Donna, Lynda, William C., Megan, and Douglas, along with their families. Visitation will be held at Hanley Funeral Home on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2026, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Roman Catholic Mass will be celebrated at St. Ann Church, Dongan Hills, on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026, at 11 a.m., with private burial to follow. Frances Dicembre, born Nov. 16, 1946, died on Jan. 29, 2026. Born in Greenwich Village, Fran moved to New Dorp as a young child and graduated from New Dorp High School in 1964. She worked at the law firm of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton before retiring in 2007. Fran loved traveling and spending time with family. She is survived by her brothers, John and Michael; her sister, Louise Rocco; nieces Luanne and Denise; and nephew Jim Rocco. Visitation will be held at Hanley Funeral Home on Tuesday, Feb. 3, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The funeral will be held Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 9 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by Mass at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church at 10 a.m. and burial at Moravian Cemetery. Lawrence “Scotty” H. Arminas, 86, was born in Brooklyn and lived in Fort Wadsworth. He graduated from Apex Technical School and Turners School of Refrigeration, becoming an Operating Engineer at the Broadway Theatre and Long Island University Brooklyn campus. A member of the I.U.O.E. local 30, Scotty previously worked as an iron worker, bartender, and cab driver for Grant City 5, and was a member of the “21” club in Midland Beach. An avid golfer and New York Football Giants fan, he coached in the Staten Island Touch Tackle League and was known for helping family and friends in times of need. He was a “friend of Bill” for 53 years. Scotty is survived by his sons Larry and Douglas; grandchildren Christopher and Angelina; and daughters-in-law Lorraine and Theresa.
