New York City just had its safest January on record — with the number of shootings and murders plummeting to new lows, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Monday.
The number of homicides plunged 60%, while shooting incidents were down 20% compared to January 2024, data shows.
“Compared to all other Januarys, we have seen the lowest number of shooting incidents, the lowest number of shooting victims, and the lowest number of homicides on record,” Tisch said on FOX 5′ “Good Day New York” as she touted the latest crime rates.

The city recorded 40 shootings last month – down from the previous all-time low of 50 set in 2025. There were also 47 shooting victims in January, a drop from the record low of 56 tallied in 2019, the data shows.
Murders, too, dropped in every single borough in January, and Manhattan and Staten Island went the entire month without a single murder.
There were 12 homicides tallied compared to the 30 on record for January 2025.
“I think people feel safer in the city, and the numbers just really tell an incredible story about what the men and women of the NYPD are doing,” Tisch said.

The decline in shoplifting, which typically surges during winter, was a credit to the department’s focused approach, Tisch said.
“It’s the right strategy — and the cops are executing it brilliantly,” she said.
“Retail theft is down 16%, which is amazing, and we’ve changed the way that we’ve approached investigating retail theft. We don’t want to see toothpaste behind glass doors and we don’t want to see our 24 hour pharmacies close,” Tisch said.
