A new thriller remake of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle is now streaming on Hulu. Maika Monroe and Mary Elizabeth Winstead lead the cast, and the story follows a suburban mother who hires a nanny to take care of her home, only to realize she may not be who she claims to be.

Directed by Michelle Garza Cervera, the Hulu iteration is a remake of the original 1992 version, which starred Annabella Sciorra and Rebecca De Mornay. The original movie earned generally positive reviews and earned a 67% Rotten Tomatoes score based on 54 reviews and a 61% audience score based on over 25,000 ratings.

However, it appears that Hulu’s version is solid, debuting with a 62% Tomatometer. That is based on only 13 reviews, and the score will likely fluctuate as more reviews get tabulated. With the movie now streaming on Hulu, no audience score is available at this time.

Based on the first reviews, critics overwhelmingly praised the performance and chemistry between Monroe and Winstead. Several noted that the remake recycles the premise of the 1992 original, albeit with a modern twist. However, that’s where the divide seems to be. Some critics welcomed these changes, while others were critical of the tamed violence and contrived execution in comparison to the 1992 version.

Both Monroe and Winstead have a strong history in the horror-thriller genre, which has awarded them scream queen titles. Monroe starred in Longlegs (which became the highest-grossing Neon movie), It Follows, and The Guest, while Winstead’s humble beginnings were Final Destination 3 and 10 Cloverfield Lane.
