1. New York Attorney General Letitia James, facing fraud charges, strikes defiant tone at Mamdani rally

New York Attorney General Letitia James struck a defiant tone Monday at a campaign rally for mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, marking her first public appearance since being indicted on federal fraud charges tied to a Virginia home purchase.

James warned of “powerful voices trying to silence truth” and vowed she “will not capitulate.” The Democrat, who has called the case politically motivated, faces potential removal from office if convicted.

2. Debate over one street safety measure continues between DOT and advocates

A push to require daylighting — clearing 20 feet near crosswalks for visibility — at every city intersection is dividing safety advocates and the Department of Transportation.

Supporters, including Councilmember Julie Won, say the measure could save lives, while the DOT argues unprotected daylighting can make turns faster and more dangerous. The agency’s study found hardened barriers, not empty space, improve safety.

3. Solar panel falls, killing woman during nor’easter, NYPD says

A 76-year-old woman was killed Sunday morning in Brighton Beach when a solar panel tore loose in the high winds of the nor’easter and struck her near the Ocean Parkway subway entrance, officials said.

The panel broke free from its steel frame and was carried about 20 feet by the wind before hitting Lyudmila Braun, who later died at a hospital.
