A mid-afternoon slashing on W49th Street yesterday put a familiar question back on the table in Hell’s Kitchen: when violence happens on our blocks, why is it so hard for the public — and local press — to learn even the most basic facts in real time?

Police said the incident happened around 3:20pm Monday near W49th Street and 9th Avenue, in the Midtown North Precinct. A 34-year-old victim was slashed in the face and taken to a local hospital. Police also said a “person of interest” was taken into custody. That’s where the official details largely stopped. Even after multiple calls to the NYPD Deputy Commissioner, Public Information (DCPI), we still could not confirm the victim’s gender, whether the person of interest is a minor, or whether any arrest has been made. A source familiar with the investigation told us the person of interest is a student, but police have not confirmed that publicly, and we are treating it as unverified.
