Earthquake rattled northern New York late Monday night

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – If you noticed some shaking, you weren’t alone. An earthquake rattled parts of northern New York and Vermont Monday night.

The 2.6 magnitude earthquake occurred at 11:39 p.m. according to U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter of the quake was about 2.9 miles northwest of Chazy, New York and had a depth of 8.7 kilometers.

According to the USGS “Did You Feel It?” data collection, the quake was felt on both sides of Lake Champlain. More than 80 people felt Monday night’s earthquake across more than 20 different zip codes. If you noticed any shaking, you can report it here.

Northern New York is no stranger to small earthquakes, but this one has the highest magnitude recorded this year. This is the 8th earthquake in this region this year. The largest earthquake to hit this area was a 5.7 magnitude earthquake about 12 miles from Massena, New York in 1944.
