THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) — A 41-year-old man was fatally shot during a fight in a Bronx subway station on Tuesday afternoon, police and sources said.

The shooting happened on the platform inside the East 170th Street subway station on the B and D lines in Mount Eden just before 3 p.m., according to the NYPD.

The victim was shot multiple times and rushed to the hospital in critical condition, police said. Sources said the unidentified man was shot in the leg and the bullet hit an artery. He died at the hospital.

The shooter fled the location wearing a gray jacket and white pants, according to the NYPD. Sources said the suspect has a lengthy criminal record with a history of mental illness.

Police are canvassing the area for the suspect. The B and D trains are bypassing the 170th Street subway station in both directions while NYPD conducts its investigation.

There have been 184 transit crimes this year, according to NYPD data.
