ALBANY, N.Y. (WRGB) — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is scheduled to be at the State Capitol on Thursday for what’s commonly known as “Tin Cup Day,” when mayors from across the state ask lawmakers for additional funding.
Mamdani, who made major promises on the campaign trail, has been calling for tax hikes on the wealthiest New Yorkers to pay for his progressive policy goals, including free busing.
Governor Kathy Hochul already supports one of his proposals — universal childcare — but says taxes in New York will not need to rise to fund the program.
In recent weeks, Mamdani has pointed to New York City’s current budget deficit, arguing the city should receive a larger share of the state budget to pay off shortfalls and support the programs he’s pushing.
“Since I’ve been governor, we’ve increased our support for NYC by 33 percent over my predecessor. That’s 25 billion dollars more they get for everything from housing to child care to education, so I have stepped up without anybody having to bend my ear,” Governor Hochul said Wednesday.

When asked about proposals like free busing, Hochul said the two sides are “having conversations.”
