A new U.S. attorney has been appointed for the Northern District of New York.
The Board of Judges appointed Donald Kinsella to the position. He was sworn in during a private ceremony on Wednesday.
He has more than 50 years of experience in criminal and civil litigation. He served in the U.S. Attorney Northern District office from 1989 until 2002, when he retired from federal service.
His appointment comes after a federal judge ruled John Sarcone was not lawfully the acting U.S. attorney in that district.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi appointed Sarcone as the interim U.S. Attorney for the Northern District last February.
However, when that interim period expired after 120 days, Bondi used a series of legal maneuvers to keep Sarcone in place as the district’s top prosecutor.
Based in Albany, the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of New York supervises nearly 50 assistant U.S. attorneys and more than 50 other employees.
