Shin allegedly stabbed Hyun Dae Kim, 22, and his friend, Hyun Suk Yu, when he tried to intervene during the attack in a Flushing apartment at around 4:30 a.m. on Jan. 6, 2022. Kim died at the hospital, and Yu survived.

Prosecutors said Shin and his co-defendant, a 16-year-old boy, burst into the apartment and stabbed the victims over a perceived slight. `The teen was arrested the same day of the incident.

After the slaying, the defendant allegedly told friends he stabbed someone and needed to get out of town, authorities said.
