STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — It is looking like it could be drier than usual in New York City this November, according to the latest weather outlook from the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center.
As indicated in the monthly precipitation outlook, the city and part of Long Island are given a 33-40% probability of experiencing less precipitation than usual this November.
The remainder of New York has equal chances of recording either above-average or below-average rainfall amounts.
Typically, Central Park receives 3.58 inches of rain in November, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data from 1991-2020.
In terms of temperatures, the monthly outlook indicated that there are equal odds of temperatures falling either above average or below average throughout the state.
For reference, the mean average temperature for the month of November in the area around Central Park is 48 degrees Fahrenheit, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data.
The fall forecast
The forecast for a potentially drier November comes amid a fall season that the Climate Prediction Center previously forecast to be warmer, but unremarkable in terms of rainfall.
Back in mid-September, the center issued a seasonal outlook which revealed that the majority of the state — from the Mohawk valley on west and north — had a 40-50% chance of temperatures leaning above average this autumn. Meanwhile, the easternmost ends of the state, including New York City, Long Island and the Capital District, were given a 50-60% likelihood of temperatures exceeding their average from October through December.
The forecast found that the entire state had equal chances of recording more precipitation or less precipitation than usual.
