STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The FDNY promoted 107 new officers to its ranks on Tuesday.

Hundreds of friends, family and firefighters from all over the city packed into the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex to cheer and watch as fire department leadership swore in 21 new battalion chiefs, 30 new captains and 56 new lieutenants to the ranks of New York’s Bravest.

On hand was new FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore, who addressed the promotees, congratulating them on what she described as the culmination of years of effort.

“Being promoted in the FDNY is not just a title change, it is a transfer of responsibility. You didn’t just pass a test, you chose to sacrifice your free time, your sleep, to prove you are ready to lead,” the commissioner said.

“You chose to be more so you can do more for the people of New York,” Bonsignore continued.

The commissioner also made a point to thank the families of those in attendance, noting that the new fire officers only succeeded because of their encouragement.

“This honor does not just belong to these officers, it belongs to the families who supported them through missed dinners, long shifts and rigorous months of study. We know today is only possible because of you,” Bonsignore said.

Bonsignore, a veteran of the FDNY and former chief of EMS Operations, was appointed the department’s 37th fire commissioner by Mayor Zohran Mamdani in January.

John M. Esposito, chief of department for the FDNY also addressed the 107 fire officers, recounting the department’s recent efforts fighting a four-alarm fire in Queens.

After the fire, Esposito says that one of the people rescued from the second floor during that blaze sent firefighters a “simple” thank-you card expressing how grateful she was.

“As you go forward after today, and you prepare yourselves to go to work, think of that,” Esposito said. “Think of what we did there — what our firefighters did, and what your job and our job is.”

“This is what makes the fire department different,” Esposito said.
