Passengers were evacuated off a plane at Newark Liberty International Airport after reported smoke in the cabin and engine failure that forced the flight to return to the ground, according to officials.

The JetBlue flight took off from Newark for West Palm Beach just before 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, but immediately returned to the transportation hub due to engine failure, a Port Authority source told NBC New York. The plane landed safely, and no injuries were reported.

After landing and exiting the runway, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the crew of the Airbus 320 reported smoke in the cockpit. Passengers had to evacuate the aircraft via emergency slides, according to the FAA.

As a result of the emergency evacuation, flight operations were temporarily suspended at Newark Airport. The FAA said some arrivals had been paused, but the ground stop had been lifted and the airport reopened by 7 p.m., according to Port Authority. Flight operations resumed, but delays were still expected.

It was not immediately clear what caused the engine failure or what led to smoke filling the cockpit. An FAA investigation was ongoing.
