NEW YORK (PIX11) — New York City is under a blizzard warning as a nor’easter barrels towards the tri-state, bringing as much as 13 to 17 inches of snow.

Heavy snow, strong winds, and near whiteout conditions are expected, with the worst impacts Sunday night through Monday morning, according to the New York City Office of Emergency Management.

Ahead of the storm, the OEM is advising residents to make appropriate travel and family care plans, as well as stock up on medicines, finish groceries and complete other essential errands before the snowfall begins on Sunday.

New Yorkers are expected to wake up to a wintry mix on Sunday morning with light snow expected as early as 6 a.m., according to the National Weather Service and the OEM. Participation is expected to transition completely to snow by 10 a.m. with rates of up to 1.5 to 2 inches per hour, forecasters from the National Weather Service say.

The heaviest snowfall is expected between 10 p.m. Sunday through 10 a.m. Monday, with potential bursts of 2 to 3 inches per hour, the OEM says.

High winds are expected to create blowing snow and whiteout conditions from 1 a.m. Sunday through 1 p.m. on Monday.
