NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — New York City schools will be closed on Monday due to a heavy snowstorm, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Sunday.

It’s the first snow day of the year, officials said. New York City students were off last week for a mid-winter break.

A decision about Tuesday has not yet been made, Mamdani said.

“We will see you soon when schools reopen,” officials said at a weather briefing Sunday.

New York City and Long Island are under a blizzard warning from Sunday morning until Monday morning, with 18 to 24 inches of snow possible for much of the region, PIX11 meteorologists say.

The governors of New York and New Jersey issued states of emergency ahead of the snowstorm, which is also expected to bring wind gusts up to 55 mph. Officials urged residents to stay home and off the roads.

Heavy snow, strong winds, and near-whiteout conditions are expected, with the worst impacts from Sunday night through Monday morning. The heaviest snowfall is expected between 10 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. Monday, with potential bursts of 2 to 3 inches per hour.
