(CNN) — A New York grandfather will be allowed to keep his custom license plate that the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) had deemed “objectionable.”
Seth Bykofsky’s custom license plate “P-B-4-WE-GO” is a lighthearted reminder before a road trip.
But last month, he got a letter from the DMV saying he “must destroy” the plate and replace it with a new, standard one.
The DMV had cited the commissioner’s rules and regulations that prohibit license plates considered to be “derogatory, contemptuous, degrading, disrespectful or inflammatory.”
Bykofsky pushed back, taking to social media and calling on state officials to reconsider.
The story caught the attention of Gov. Kathy Hochul, who intervened on his behalf.
Hochul called Bykofsky herself to apologize for the inconvenience, and she gave him the good news that he would be allowed to keep the plate.
“I’ve got a couple of little granddaughters, and I’ll be reminding them of the lesson that you’re sharing with all of us on your license plates,” Hochul said during the phone call. “So, uh, well done. I’m sorry for the inconvenience, and I’m glad we can put things right again, and I’ll settle that very soon with you.”
Bykofsky thanked the governor and added, “You always come through for New Yorkers.”
