STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Taking a few extra seconds at a stop sign to check for oncoming traffic could make all the difference in avoiding a potential crash.
One Staten Island driver may have learned that lesson the hard way; a dash cam recently caught two cars narrowly avoiding a collision in South Beach.
The footage, submitted to the Advance/SILive.com, shows a silver SUV approaching a stop sign at Foch Avenue, near the Hickory Avenue intersection, during the evening rush hour on Wednesday, Oct. 1.
At the same time, a white Tesla is seen approaching the same intersection on Hickory Avenue, heading toward Olympia Boulevard — a direction that does not have a stop sign.
As the SUV approaches the Foch Avenue stop sign, the driver does not come to a full stop, and quickly accelerates into the intersection.
After suddenly seeing the Tesla, the SUV driver slams on the brakes, avoiding what could’ve been a serious T-bone collision by only a few feet.
The SUV driver then reverses out of the intersection and waits for the Tesla to move before continuing along Foch Avenue.
Have you captured any reckless driving on Staten Island? If so, please email dash cam footage and any additional information to transportation reporter Mike Matteo.
