“The NYPD continues to closely monitor the ongoing hostilities in the Middle East. Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the attacks over the weekend, while reminding New Yorkers that they would be protected.
“I’ve been in close contact with our police commissioner and emergency management officials,” he said. “We are increasing agency coordination, as well as patrols of sensitive locations, out of an abundance of caution.”
NYPD officers were seen posted outside of the building on Third Avenue that houses the Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations.
As is protocol, the department is beefing up its presence at sensitive locations — not just at diplomatic sites, but at cultural, religious and other relevant locations as well.
Reportedly since June, the NYPD has been operating at a heightened threat environment after the U.S. aided Israel’s attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
NYPD officers working out of the outposts in the region are in communication with their city counterparts, providing any relevant information on the escalation of events in the Middle East that could impact life in the city.
The department also closely monitors local demonstrations related to the conflict.
Mamdani had a message for Iranians who call the city home.
“You are a part of the fabric of this city. You are our students, our artists, our small business owners, our neighbors, our community leaders,” he said. “You will be safe here.”
