ALBANY, N.Y. (WKTV) — Drivers are being urged to check their vehicles for safety recalls as part of Vehicle Safety Recalls Week in New York.

Vehicle Safety Recalls Week runs from March 2-8.

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles highlighted that one out of every five cars on the road in 2024 had an open recall, including more than 2 million in New York.

Light trucks had the highest recall rates with 24% needing repairs, while 23% of minivans and 21% of cars were also affected.

The DMV website offers an online tool to help drivers find open recalls and get information on how to fix or replace parts for free.

Drivers will need their license plate number or Vehicle Identification Number, which can be found on their registration, insurance card, dashboard or doorjamb.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that in 2024, there were 1,073 recalls for vehicles, car seats, tires, RVs and other equipment, affecting more than 29 million vehicles nationwide.
