STATEN ISLAND (PIX11) — Republican leaders on Staten Island are celebrating a win this morning.

A Supreme Court decision has temporarily blocked the attempt to redraw New York City’s only Republican seat.

This was a months-long battle that had initially been favorable to Democrats at the state level, but things changed when it got to the Supreme Court.

Since last year, several states have been pushing for some sort of redistricting, and both parties have been trying to protect or expand their seats in the House. States like Texas and California have tried to rearrange their congressional structure ahead of the midterms.

In New York, the focus has been on the 11th Congressional District.

Right now, this is the only seat in the city that’s held by a Republican, Representative Nicole Malliotakis.

A state court had initially ordered the redistricting, saying that the current map under-represents Latino and black voters.

Republicans challenged that decision, arguing the redraw was politically motivated.

That fight went all the way to the Supreme Court, which ultimately blocked the new map from taking effect for now.

This is not a final decision, though. The justices say they will review the case, but for now, the district lines will remain the same for this year’s elections.

District 11 includes Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn. We are expecting to hear from Republican leaders later this morning.
