Weather can be such a tease sometimes.

Astronomical spring doesn’t start until March 20, but we’re getting a sneak preview next week in the form of very spring-like temperatures.

After a brutally cold winter, we’re finally turning the corner from the deep freeze to shorts and t-shirts weather.  Beginning Sunday, high temperatures will top 60 degrees – the first time that’s happened in New York City since early November!

And we won’t stop there.  By mid-week, we’ll be flirting with 70.  If we hit it, it’ll be the first time the city has been that warm since October 19.

Next week’s warmth will continue for a few days before cooler weather makes a return by the weekend, so enjoy it while it lasts.

Weather can be such a tease sometimes.

Big temperature swings are a hallmark of spring. It’s the season with a persistent tug-of-war between warm and cold air masses. One day, a pocket of cold air moves into the region, and a few days later, a mass of warm air nudges it out. The cycle repeats itself.

For the remainder of this week, we’re stuck between warm air to our south and cold air to our north.  The dividing line is marked by a cold front that runs right through the tri-state area.

Along the front, high temperatures will be close to normal for New York City in early March, in the mid-40s.  In addition, a disturbance will ride along the front and bring us rain Thursday into Friday morning, so be sure you carry an umbrella as we wrap up the work week.

We’ll have another chance for showers Saturday night before the weather dries out and temperatures begin to surge Sunday. If you have weather-dependent plans Saturday night, the rain might be a factor.

Otherwise, during the day on both Saturday and Sunday, conditions look dry.

The surge of spring temperatures begins on Saturday, when the stationary front over the area turns to a warm front and shifts north. That opens the door for a steady south wind for several days that will warm us from the 50s to the 70s.

If you’re a warm-weather lover, this should come as really good news. Another bit of good news is that our average high temperatures in March warm very quickly as the month progresses.  As we get deeper into spring, the “cold” spells we get are less and less likely to rival the bitter cold blasts so fresh in our memories.
