AUBURN, N.Y. — The New York State Police arrested a teenager for an assault at the Fingerlakes Mall in Auburn, N.Y.

The state police said James T. Rio, 18, of Auburn, was charged with assault in the second degree, a felony. He was also charged with misdemeanor counts of criminal possession of a weapon and menacing.

Troopers responded to the mall around 4:37 p.m. on March 7 for a menacing complaint involving a knife and a possible stabbing.

A state police investigation determined that Rio and the victim, 19, were involved in a fight at the mall. The victim encountered Rio and several others at the arcade and pool area of the mall when an argument occurred.

The police said the victim left the mall, but Rio followed him and struck him with a pool stick. Rio then allegedly pulled out a knife and chased the victim into the parking lot. The police said Rio caught up the victim and stabbed him in the right side of the chest. The victim’s injury is described as a non-life-threatening small puncture wound.

The police said Rio fled the area but was eventually found walking by a nearby business. He was taken into custody by officers without incident.
