A New Jersey police department is celebrating after taking in a lost dog and linking the pup to her owners in Texas, from where she vanished two years ago.

According to Clark police, a resident in the area called cops to report a lost dog roaming around Clark Commons, a large shopping center, last week. A patrolman picked up the dog and used a chip reader to identify the number of a pet finder service, cops said. He was able to track down the last recorded owners.

When contacted, police say the dog owners, who live in Glenn Heights, were shocked. That was when they told police the dog had gone missing two years ago. The owners made plans to fly to New Jersey, but couldn’t get to the Garden State for another three days to retrieve their dog.

Rather than send her to a shelter, Clark police say they bathed the dog, fed her and gave her treats and regular walks, and gave her blankets and toys to keep her comfortable.

The owners arrived Saturday and were happily reunited with their dog, Koko. The pup was seen “running right to her mommy,” according to police.

“As a dog lover amongst many other dog lovers, we were not going to make that puppy wait in a shelter or pound,” Police Director Patrick Grady said. “Koko was living her best life inside the dispatch room the last 3 days, and hopefully it will get even better being reunited with her family again.”

The animal appears to be in good shape. Photos showed their happy reunion.
