MANHATTAN, IL — A Manhattan Junior High student’s comment about having a gun while on a school bus Wednesday sparked concern in the bus driver and a police response, Manhattan District 114 officials said in a notice to parents.
“A student made an inappropriate comment about having a gun,” wrote Superintendent Dr. Damien Aherne. “While there was not additional concern from students on the bus, the driver immediately reported the incident.”
When the bus arrived at the school, administrators followed procedure to investigate the incident, with the cooperation of other bus passengers, LW210 transportation officials, and Manhattan police.
A search revealed a miniature replica of a water gun, Aherne said. Any potential threat toward students or staff is unfounded.
“All students have been assured of their safety and we appreciate the quick and thorough response of all involved,” Aherne wrote.
“We are thankful for our partnership with Manhattan School District 114 in keeping our children safe,” Manhattan Police Chief Ryan Gulli said.
