In the latest legal battle between New York State and the Trump administration, Attorney General Letitia James — along with 16 other states — is suing the federal government over its demand for college admissions and student data.

The U.S. Department of Education says the survey is intended to increase transparency in higher education, particularly regarding diversity, equity and inclusion policies used on college campuses.

The administration argues that these policies are discriminatory.

However, Attorney General James says the true goal is to advance a political agenda — eliminating DEI initiatives and promoting racial discrimination. Her office says New York schools have never been asked to turn over this type of data and that systems like SUNY would be forced to divert substantial resources to comply.
