The safest cities in America have been ranked, and surprisingly, a suburb right outside New York City has made it high on the list.
Yonkers, the third-largest city in New York state, is now the fifth spot on the list of safest cities, created by WalletHub. Nestled on the Hudson River in Westchester County, Yonkers is located just north of the Bronx and about 2.4 miles north of Marble Hill, the northernmost point in Manhattan.
Warwick, Rhode Island, took the top spot. The third-largest city in the Ocean State earned its ranking due to having the third-lowest rate of aggravated assaults and the 32nd lowest number of murders among all the cities in the study.

It also boasts the seventh-lowest number of thefts per capita, contributing to its strong financial safety conditions.
Despite Yonkers’ housing costs being higher than average and the overall cost of living slightly exceeding the national average, largely due to housing expenses, its proximity to Manhattan – a mere 30-minute train ride – proves that location is key.
The rankings were determined by a personal finance website that compared over 180 cities across more than 40 key indicators of safety. The three main categories evaluated were home and community safety, natural disaster risk, and financial safety.

The rankings utilized multiple metrics across three main categories, with each city receiving a score out of 100 points – where 100 indicated the safest location. WalletHub examined everything from traffic deaths per capita and assault rates per capita to joblessness levels and the percentage of residents without insurance coverage.
“When people think about safety in a city, their minds probably immediately go to things like the crime rate, auto fatality rate or risk of natural disasters,” WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo says. “The safest cities in America protect residents from these threats of bodily harm and property damage, but on top of that, they also help secure people’s financial safety.”
The other cities to make it to the top five include Warwick, RI (first), Overland Park, KS, Burlington, VT, Juneau, AK, and finally Yonkers, NY, rounds out the list.
New York City, meanwhile, landed at 117th place in the overall rankings.
