BROOKLYN, Mich. (WILX) – First responders and veterans were invited to attend an appreciation luncheon Sunday at Camp Liberty, a nonprofit that offers outdoor recreation programs and support services to those who have served.
The event also included an open house for attendees to learn more about what Camp Liberty provides.
Camp Liberty offers programs including hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation, with the goal of building fellowship among veterans and first responders. The organization also provides free meals and lodging to those in need.
Dr. Mick Worcinak, a veteran, said the nonprofit fills a gap for those transitioning out of service.
“Most of the guys that retire at our age, we really don’t have any place like this,” Worcinak said. “We don’t own property, we can’t go hunting, we don’t know where to do it. But, they make it so accessible here.”
Camp Liberty funds events like the appreciation luncheon through donations. The organization was established in 2012.
