NEW YORK (WBNG) — A burn ban is in effect across New York State starting Monday, March 16, through May 14, due to the increased risk of wildfires, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).
Burning trash, tires, refuse and other solid wastes is prohibited at all times, including burning trash in a burn barrel.
Burning loose leaves, leaf piles, brush piles and chemically treated wood during a burn ban is also prohibited.
Campfires, small cooking fires, or outdoor fires that are less than three feet in height and four feet in length, width, or diameter, however, are permitted.
To build a campfire safely:Check the DEC’s fire safety map to make sure it’s safe to burnAvoid burning things on windy daysNever use fire accelerants such as kerosene, gasoline, or lighter fluidKeep water or a fire extinguisher nearby.Fully extinguish your fire when you’re finished.Agricultural burns
Open fires on agricultural land are not subject to the annual brush burning ban, however certain restrictions are in place.
Permitted: agricultural wastes may be burned on-site where they are grown or generated.
Prohibited: pesticides, plastics, trash, tires and other wastes.
