Three people were killed, and more than a dozen other people were injured, in a fire in Queens Monday afternoon, according to the FDNY.
Just before 12:30 p.m., a call was made for a fire at 44-49 College Point Boulevard between Avey and Pople avenues in a three-story apartment building in Flushing, officials said.
According to Chief of Fire Operations Kevin Woods, three victims jumped from an upper floor. Another victim trapped on the second floor was rescued via a portable ladder by the fire department, and two members of the FDNY had to be rescued when a staircase collapsed in the building, Woods said.
Two adults and one child were killed in the fire, Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore said. According to the FDNY, two other individuals are in critical condition at Jacobi Hospital; three people with serious or non-life-threatening injuries were transported to Booth Memorial Hospital, and two civilians suffered minor injuries. Six firefighters with minor injuries are also being treated at area hospitals, officials said.
According to fire officials, the fire is under control but there is heavy damage to the apartment building.
