This is a weird-looking mid-major. If you stripped the names off the roster and just listed height and weight, this looks like a team from a power conference. When they’ve stepped up against power conference teams, they’ve been blown out, but this isn’t a team that Purdue is going to be able to bully physically, at least not without some effort.
The scoring is also wild. They’re 18th in the nation in 3-pointers attempted (962) and 20th in makes (346). Chris Ashby averages 8.6 attempts per/game, and Carson Schweiger averages 6.6. To put that in perspective, Fletcher Loyer leads Purdue with 6.7 attempts per/game. These guys want to play fast and get as many perimeter shots up as possible. I’m not sure there is such a thing as a bad 3-point attempt in this team’s eyes.
I’m going to need to look further into this, because despite launching 3’s early, often, and consistently, they are 54th in the nation in free throw attempts (766) and 49th in free throws made (566). It looks like the guards that don’t shoot much (Berman and Watford) draw most of their fouls. This looks like a drive-and-kick team to me. You don’t see many jump shot-reliant teams like Queens get to the line like this (see Purdue, Boilermakers).
Look, Queens is a 15-seed for a reason. They haven’t been competitive against the high-major teams on their schedule. I would think that, as much as they score, they could have come close at least once, but their scoring hasn’t held up, and their defense has been abysmal.
They’ll ask some interesting questions of the Boilermakers. More so than some #15 seeds, but at the end of the day, Purdue is a prohibitive favorite for a reason. Queens is going to attempt to outscore the most efficient scoring team in college basketball. I don’t like their chances of playing this close, but I think it’s going to be fun to watch them try.
