QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John’s baseball team remains on the road this week, taking a trip to Stony Brook for a midweek contest at Joe Nathan Field.

Slugger Adam Agresti was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week following an impressive stretch of play last week, the league office announced on Monday. This is the first weekly honor of the catcher’s career. The last time a Johnnie was named Player of the Week was Luke Orbon on April 14, 2025. Agresti becomes the third player this season to earn conference recognition, joining Jon LeGrande and Evan Chaffee on the honor roll.
Agresti propelled the Red Storm to a 3-2 week with a series win over Charlotte and a midweek victory over Marist. The catcher batted .400 with six hits, five home runs and 12 RBIs, and had four straight games with a home run, including a walk-off two-run blast to defeat Marist on Wednesday, 3-1. The Yorktown, N.Y., native ranks 32nd in the country in the long ball category and second in the BIG EAST.
Last weekend, St. John’s traveled to Charlotte, N.C., for a three-game series against Charlotte at Hayes Stadium.
In the series opener on March 13, the Red Storm defeated the 49ers, 8-6. Agresti powered the offense, going 2-for-3 with two home runs and a career-high six RBIs, extending his home run streak to four games. Shaun McMillan added a two-RBI double, while LeGrande swiped two bases and scored three runs. On the mound Liam O’Leary tossed 6.0 strong innings, striking out five and allowing just one earned run to earn his first win of the season, while Victor Frederick recorded the save.
On March 14, the Johnnies secured the series victory with a 3-2 win over Charlotte. Agresti stayed hot at the plate, blasting a two-run home run for his fifth straight game with a long ball. LeGrande paced the lineup with a 3-for-4 performance and drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning. Chaffee delivered a quality start, allowing two runs over 6.0 innings, while Dylan Johnson closed the door late to earn his second save of the season.
St. John’s closed the weekend on Sunday with a 10-9 loss in the series finale. The Red Storm jumped out to an early lead with a four-run second inning and later reclaimed the lead in the ninth when Jack Tate delivered a pinch-hit RBI double. Lewis Rodriguez went a perfect 3-for-3 from the dish with a run and an RBI, while LeGrande, McMillan and Jayder Raifstanger each recorded two hits and drove in a run. The 49ers responded with two runs in the bottom of the ninth to walk off the Johnnies and avoid the sweep.
The Johnnie pitching staff has produced a string of strong outings, highlighted Chaffe and O’Leary landing in the top five in the BIG EAST in walks allowed per nine innings. The bullpen has shut down opposing batters is allowing just 8.36 hits per nine innings, the best mark in the BIG EAST and 72nd in the nation. Defensively, the Red Storm boast a .978 fielding percentage, leading the conference and ranking 58th nationally.
The St. John’s-Stony Brook series dates back to 2001, with Red Storm holding a 4-2 edge in the all-time series. The two programs split the season series last year, playing both at Stony Brook and in Queens. In both instances, the home team defended their home field. In the first meeting, the Seawolves won 5-3 on March 11. On May 6, the Johnnies secured an 8-4 victory. Following Tuesday’s contest, Stony Brook will make the trip to Queens on May 5, serving as the final non-conference opponent of the regular season for St. John’s.
The Seawolves enter the midweek matchup with 3-14 overall record, and a 2-4 mark in the CAA. Tuesday’s contest marks the fifth game at Joe Nathan Field this season, going 1-3 over the first four and dropping the most recent game 14-8 to Siena last Tuesday.
This past weekend, Stony Brook went 1-2 down in Charleston for its second CAA series. After taking the first game in a 3-1 decision, the Seawolves were walked off in the 10th inning, falling 5-4. On Sunday, Charleston took the series victory winning the third game 6-2.
As a team Stony Brook has a .216 batting average with 118 hits. The pitching staff owns a 7.11 ERA to go along with 141 punch outs. Nick Zampieron leads the team with a .326 batting average with 14 hits. Nicholas Dromboski and Johnny Pilla lead the team with 15 hits each. Defensively, the Seawolves own a .968 fielding percentage. The pitching staff is anchored by Micah Worley, who owns a 2.95 ERA and a team-high 34 strike outs.
Following the midweek tilt, the Johnnies head south once more for a three-game set at UT Arlington from March 20-22.
