A Bronx, New York man has been arrested for forgery and felony theft. Delaware State Police were contacted by a 75 year old Milford woman who told them she had mailed a check to pay a bill and was notified that the payment was not received. She learned that $6000 was withdrawn from her account. Detectives learned the check was intercepted, altered and cashed at a bank in New York by 32 year old Michael Smith of the Bronx, New York. A warrant was obtained for his arrest and Smith turned himself in at JP Court 2 and taken to Troop 7 where he was charged.
Forgery 2nd Degree – Alters Written Instrument of Another Person without Authority (Felony)
Theft $1,500 or Greater and the Victim is 62 Years of Age or Older (Felony)
Smith was arraigned and released on a $5000 unsecured bond.
