An off-duty NYPD cop shot and gravely wounded a man suspected of stealing his wife’s car in the Bronx late Monday, law enforcement sources said.
The cop — who is assigned to the Public Security Section under the department’s Intelligence Bureau and is often stationed at Gracie Mansion — opened fire around 9:10 p.m. on West 231st Street near Albany Crescent in Kingsbridge, hitting the 30-year-old victim in the head, the sources said.

The ailing man went by private means to NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, according to police.
The violence erupted when the cop tracked the previously stolen vehicle and found the 30-year-old man and another person believed to be involved in the heist, sources said.
The officer had not been arrested by Tuesday afternoon, and it remained unclear what – if any – charges he would face.
He was placed on modified duty, sources said. The investigation is ongoing by the department’s Force Investigation Division, according to police.
Surveillance footage obtained by The Post captured two men approaching each other in the street, with one man appearing to pull out a firearm. The other person then staggers backwards against a parked white car.

Both men disappear behind the car — out of the view of the surveillance video. A few moments later, the white car drives off and the victim is seen lying on the sidewalk with someone crouched over him, the video shows.
Selena Roode, a mom of two who lives in an apartment building near the shooting, told The Post that the victim’s girlfriend was on the phone with him while he “was hiding under a car” last night.
Roode, 30, said she heard “multiple” shots ring out, though she initially thought the ruckus was her elderly neighbor “tumbling down the stairs.”
“When I came out, I saw [the girlfriend] there shaking and she’s on speaker phone, and I’m hearing what they’re talking about. I was like, ‘Oh my God’, like you want me to call 911, because she was ready to just walk out, would’ve walked right out into the crossfire,” she said.
Roode speculated the victim was on his way to visit his girlfriend, who lives in the same building “when he was struck by whoever the perpetrator was.”
Some of the gunshots also shattered the windows of nearby businesses, she said.
Another neighbor in the building said he heard “two quick pops” and “a lot of arguing afterwards.”
The violence happened in the confines of the NYPD’s 50th Precinct, where three shootings with seven victims had been reported in 2026 through Sunday, according to department data.
At that time in 2025, no shootings had been reported within the precinct’s boundaries.
