The Justin Fields era has reached its end in New York, as the Jets traded the veteran quarterback to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs sent the Jets a 2027 sixth-round draft pick for Fields, the team announced on Wednesday, two days after news of the transaction broke.

Fields was one year into the two-year, $40 million contract he signed last offseason. The Jets will reportedly pay Fields $7 million of the $10 million that he was owned for next season. According to the Athletic’s Zach Rosenblatt, Fields would have incurred a $22 million dead salary cap hit and would’ve saved the Jets only $1 million against the cap if he was released.

Fields is expected to be the backup for Patrick Mahomes, who is coming off a season-ending torn ACL. Fields will replace Gardner Minshew, who signed with the Arizona Cardinals.

Without Fields, the Jets will move forward with Geno Smith, Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe in their quarterback room. Tyrod Taylor is currently a free agent.

Last season, Fields threw for 1,259 yards, 7 touchdowns and 1 interception in nine starts, leading the team to a 2-7 record. The 26-year-old quarterback also added 383 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

Fields was in and out of the lineup during his time with the Jets. Fields’ concussion in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills opened the door for Taylor to start. Taylor started in Week 3 before Fields returned in Week 4. Fields was then benched for Taylor in Week 7, but after Taylor suffered a knee injury, Fields made his way back into the starting lineup.

Once healthy, Taylor took over as the Jets’ starter again in Week 12, while Fields finished the year on injured reserve after suffering a knee injury. Cook, an undrafted rookie who was on the practice squad, finished the season as the Jets’ starter due to the injuries at the position.

The Jets’ offense ranked last in passing yards, tied for last in passing touchdowns and 29th in total yards last season.

The Chiefs will be Fields’ third team in as many seasons. He split time with Russell Wilson as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starter during the 2024-25 season before succeeding Aaron Rodgers with the Jets the following year. Fields spent his first three years with the Chicago Bears after being selected with the 11th overall draft pick out of Ohio State in 2021, before eventually being replaced by Caleb Williams.
