OGDENSBURG— Two Chinese men from New York City were arrested in Ogdensburg March 19 for allegedly stealing more than $50,000 from an elderly person through a scam.Â
Chun Yan, 42, of Brooklyn, and Canjian Chein, 46, of Queens, were each charged March 19 with second-degree grand larceny, attempted second-degree grand larceny, and third-degree conspiracy, according to Ogdensburg Police.Â
Chen and Yan were arrested following investigation of a complaint alleging that a person had been scammed out of more than $50,000 by the two Chinese men.Â
Both are held pending arraignment in Ogdensburg City Court.Â
Ogdensburg Police were assisted by New York State Police, Homeland Security, the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, Massena Police, and Daniel Mousaw of the St. Lawrence County District Attorney’s Office.Â
The Ogdensburg Police Department noted that there are several scams attempting to defraud community members of money, saying there are “so many out there so there are some generic tips to help not be scammed.”

If anyone tells you a family member is arrested, in the hospital, etc. and ask to send
money, it is a scam.
If anyone is asking you for gift cards to be sent it is a scam
Asking for large amounts of money is often a scam. Most banks are aware of all these scams, listen to the members of the bank and second guess the withdrawal.
If person gets aggressive and threatens arrest, monetary loss, liens, etc. for money, it is a
scam.
