If you live in New York state there have been some new New York State and local holidays that have been added to the school district calendar for the year.
One that has been adopted by tons of school districts across New York State is coming up in May.
Eid-al-Adha it’s coming up on Wednesday May 27th this year and a lot of school districts have the holiday off. Eid-al-Adha is a major Islamic holiday that really lasts until sundown on Tuesday night through sundown on Wednesday night. Couple of years ago more and more public high school and elementary schools have given the students and teachers off to celebrate.
It is a series of holidays that more and more people have been getting off for in New York State. Other holidays that students have been getting off include the Asian Lunar New Year and Eid al-Fitr.
The decision to put in more federal holidays has met a lot of criticism between parents and even some teachers as well. From the parent side they are very mad that they have to get another babysitter because it is already hard with all of the days off that students get
From the teacher’s side, they seem to be getting frustrated because more and more holidays are being added to the school year and now the last day of classes and exams is getting pushed back later and later. In some New York State schools, their districts did not have graduation until days before the 4th of July. Therefore the teachers and students can’t start summer break officially until all of the ceremonies are done.
