STATEWIDE — ATTORNEY GENERAL Letitia James co-led a coalition of 39 states, cities and counties, according to a March 19 press release, in petitioning the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit to overturn the Trump administration’s rescission of the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2009 endangerment finding — the regulatory cornerstone that established greenhouse gas emissions as a public health threat.
The EPA formally repealed the finding in late February 2026 and subsequently rolled back all federal vehicle emissions standards. The coalition argues the move contradicts settled science and attempts to relitigate a question the Supreme Court addressed in 2007.
New York City is among the municipal co-petitioners alongside Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco, among others.
The coalition asks the D.C. Circuit to vacate the rescission and reinstate the finding.
