Police arrested a man in Norwich on Friday who was wanted on a murder charge in New York — marking the second person wanted in the same shooting to be apprehended by local police.

Anthony Caballero, 19, of St. Augustine, Florida was taken into custody following a “large-scale arrest operation” at 9 Clairmont Ave. which involved multiple agencies, according to Lt. Kyle Besse of the Norwich Police Department.

Besse said the New York City Police Department holds a warrant for Caballero charging him with second-degree murder in connection with a shooting in the Bronx, New York on Feb. 11. He was charged as a fugitive from justice and with interfering with an officer.

Caballero was held in lieu of a $1 million bond and was set to face a judge. His extradition to New York is pending.

According to Besse, authorities found that Caballero was in Norwich after police came into contact with 19-year-old Zion Martinez on March 4, just before 12:20 p.m., and learned that he was wanted by police in New York on a second-degree murder charge tied to the Bronx shooting. The NYPD also had a second warrant out for his arrest.

Norwich police charged Martinez with fugitive from justice, interfering with police and possession of a controlled substance. He remains held on $550,000 bond pending extradition.

Following the arrest, detectives in New York informed Norwich investigators that Martinez was likely with Caballero and that they were each wanted in connection with the same shooting.

Authorities then set up the operation that led to Caballero’s apprehension.
