The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are investigating a fatal stabbing that occurred downtown Friday afternoon, authorities said.

Shortly after 12:20 p.m. yesterday, the Jersey City Police Department was notified of a stabbing in the area of Jersey Avenue, 1st Street, and Maxwell Street, Acting Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello said in a statement.

Responding officers located an injured man with an apparent stab wound to the abdomen. He was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead just after 1 p.m.

The cause and manner of death, as well as a positive identification of the man, are pending with the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, according to Mello.

During the initial investigation, a person of interest was identified and remains in custody.
This matter is actively being investigated by the HCPO Homicide Unit and the Jersey City PD.
