Western New Yorkers could get some happy news in their mailbox soon if New York lawmakers have their way. Another round of checks could be coming to 716 residents, this time to help offset high energy prices.

New York State Looking To Pass “POWER” Act

Members of the New York State Assembly are looking to help provide some funds to residents of the state to help battle the rising costs of energy. The proposed bills would send checks up to $500 to households to help pay electric and gas bills.

Who Would Be Eligible For A “POWER”  Rebate Check?

The current bill breaks down the amount of the checks based on current household incomes. According to the bill, households with an annual income under $150,000 would get a check for $500, and households that have an annual income between $150,000 and $300,000 would get a check for $300.

It would cost New York State wound $2.6 billion dollars to pay out these rebate checks to over 5 million households in New York State.

Also, part of the bill would call for a 2-year freeze on rate increases to utilities across the state.

When Can You Expect A “POWER” Rebate Check?

Right now, the Bill is still under consideration and is not a law. The “POWER” rebate checks are part of the Assembly’s fiscal year 2026–27 plan. That means it would still have to be approved by lawmakers and the governor before becoming official.

If approved, the check would be sent out after April 1st, 2026. That is when the fiscal year starts for New York State.
