The New York Yankees are making their final preparations for Opening Day on March 25 on the road against the San Francisco Giants. Unfortunately, they won’t have shortstop Anthony Volpe on the field to begin the year.

Volpe is working his way back from a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder, which is his non-throwing shoulder. He went through surgery back in October of 2025.

Last season, the injury originally occurred in May. Volpe played through the injury for months before undergoing surgery.

With that being said, a new update has been announced by the Yankees before Opening Day. They have revealed a potential timeline for Volpe.

Chris Kirschner of The Athletic shared that Aaron Boone revealed Volpe will likely begin a rehab assignment in April.

“Anthony Volpe will likely start a rehab assignment around the second week of April, Aaron Boone said,” Kirschner wrote on X. “He’ll essentially go through a full spring training at that point.”

Yankees Fans Have Been Split on Anthony Volpe

At 24 years old, Volpe truly has just begun his MLB career. He has played in three Major League seasons for the franchise and has not lived up to the hype quite yet.

Just a few short years ago, he was one of the top prospects in baseball. Many expected him to be an instant star. Since that hasn’t happened in his first three years, some fans have been calling for the Yankees to give up on Volpe.

Throughout his first three years at the big league level, Volpe has appeared in 472 games. He has hit 52 home runs to go along with 192 RBI, 70 stolen bases, and a slash line of .222/.283/.379. His defense has also struggled at times.

Despite the slow start, the young shortstop still has the talent and potential that made him such a big-time prospect. It’s way too early for New York to give up on him.

What Should Fans Expect from the Team This Season?

Back in February, The Athletic’s Jim Bowden projected that the Yankees would finish second in the American League East division race behind the Toronto Blue Jays.

That would still give New York a chance to get into the postseason.

Brian Cashman opted for a quiet all-around MLB offseason. The Yankees didn’t make any blockbuster moves, outside of re-signing star outfielder Cody Bellinger.

Entering the 2026 season, there are questions that need to be answered. Volpe getting back on the field and showing signs of development would be a big step in the right direction.
