The 99th Precinct may be re-opening its doors, with rumors of a Brooklyn Nine-Nine going around.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine started with the arrival of Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher) to the 99th Brooklyn precinct to become its newest captain. The 2013 comedy assembled a solid ensemble, led by Andy Samberg as Jake Peralta, Melissa Fumero as Amy Santiago and Stephanie Beatriz as Rosa Diaz, among others. While shows focused on law enforcement have always had an audience, especially on network TV, Brooklyn Nine-Nine was a fresh take on the genre, as it was a sitcom. After
One of the few shows that was saved after being canceled, the cop sitcom moved from Fox to NBC for its final stretch. Brooklyn Nine-Nine officially ended season 8 with a satisfying send-off for its characters. Because the series had enough time to craft a proper ending, each of its main characters were given their respective time in the spotlight, making it a bittersweet finale in 2021. Five years later, Brooklyn Nine-Nine may be making its comeback — at least based on one star’s recent social media activity.
Hitchcock actor Dirk Blocker has sparked rumors of a Brooklyn Nine-Nine reboot via his latest posts on his official Instagram. The actor first shared an image of him and his on-screen partner, Joel McKinnon Miller as Scully, with the caption “Let’s just say, the sexiest duo MIGHT be back.” Subsequently, he shared a couple of behind-the-scenes photos from the set of Brooklyn Nine-Nine featuring Fumero’s Amy, Dean Winter’s the Vulture, and Samberg’s Jake. Blocker doubles down on his earlier tease, writing: “Surely you get it now ?” Check out the photos below:
For context, Brooklyn Nine-Nine wrapped up with a definitive end of an era for the 99th Precinct. While other sitcoms don’t like to fully close the door on its stories, the Fox-turned-NBC comedy boldly did, by significantly overhauling the Brooklyn-based agency. For starters, Holt and Amy officially moved on from the precinct and took on their new roles as deputy commissioner and chief of the reform program. Meanwhile, Jake retired from the force altogether to raise his and Amy’s son. In its epilogue, it was revealed that Terry (Terry Crews) became the new Captain of the team with Charles (Joe Lo Truglio), Hitchcock, Scully, as well as new members of the squad.
As exciting as this is as an idea, the prospect of a proper Brooklyn Nine-Nine revival is unlikely. Aside from Braugher’s death, Fumero has also been cast to join Matthew Gray Gubler in CBS’s Einstein — a network TV show, which means longer production times. Granted that a reboot can focus on Terry’s new squad, but that may not be enough of a hook to draw people in, especially if the show won’t be featuring its higher-profile characters. Another possible way to resurrect the franchise is to do a Hitchcock and Sully prequel. Brooklyn Nine-Nine explored the pair’s history briefly, and that could be a good starting point for their spinoff.
Considering the continued popularity of Brooklyn Nine-Nine five years after it ended, expanding its universe with new shows isn’t a bad idea. A full-blown revival may be difficult, if not downright impossible, to work right now, but as mentioned, there are other ways to bring back some of the show’s characters.
