Starting pitcher Luis Gil has not been named to the New York Yankees’ Opening Day roster in any capacity, as the right-hander and 2024 AL Rookie of the Year will begin the 2026 campaign in the minors.

Following an inconsistent showing in spring training, Gil was known to be the odd man out of the Yankees’ initial four-man rotation to start the season — a tighter group of starters based on four off days being built into the first 13 games of the season.

Once the schedule begins to ramp up, he is a favorite to take that No. 5 starter’s role, joining Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Will Warren, and Ryan Weathers.

Gil will work with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in the meantime, rather than being deployed as a reliever for the first few weeks. Instead, Cade Winquest, Brent Headrick, and Jake Bird have been selected to break camp with the big-league club.

“I think he was a little upset about it, but I feel like he’s in a good frame of mind right now,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters on Tuesday (h/t MLB.com). “It’s a guy in the physical prime of his career, and like the measurable numbers, like the physical evaluations that strength and conditioning does, he’s in the best physical place he’s ever been in his life. He’s as strong as he’s ever been, and we feel like that’s going to translate, hopefully, based on what we saw in his last outing.”

The 27-year-old was 2-1 with a 4.66 ERA across 19.1 innings of work, but went five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with seven strikeouts and a walk on Friday against the Baltimore Orioles.
