The New York Mets will wear a memorial shoulder patch throughout the 2026 season to honor former manager Davey Johnson, who passed away in September at the age of 82, the team announced Tuesday.
Johnson managed the Mets from 1984 to 1990, leading the franchise to its last World Series title in 1986. He holds the franchise record with 595 managerial wins and a .588 winning percentage.

“Davey was a bold manager who led with a quiet confidence and an unwavering belief in his team,” a statement from Mets owners Steve and Alex Cohen read. “He cared deeply for his players both on and off the field. Some of the greatest players in our team history credit him for their success. In the 40th anniversary of the 1986 championship, this is a fitting tribute to the man who guided the team to that title.”
Johnson’s family will participate in the Opening Day ceremonies on Thursday at Citi Field, ahead of the Mets’ matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates. His widow, Susan, will escort his stepson and grandson to the mound for a ceremonial first pitch, which will be caught by Mets Hall of Famers Darryl Strawberry and Mookie Wilson — both members of that 1986 title-winning team.
