One of Moriah basketball’s all-time greats is expected to receive a special honor this spring. Former Viking boys’ basketball head coach Brian Cross is Section VII’s inductee into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame. Cross led Moriah to their first and only state championship in program history, taking down Newfield High School 61-52 in the 2017 Class D state championship game. His team was the last school in the section to capture a state title before the Bolton High School boys’ basketball team won the Class D state crown in 2026. Cross was a proven winner in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference. He led his teams to 14 Section VII championship titles, including 11 consecutive sectional banners when Moriah was in Class D and Class C. He amassed 390 career wins between the regular season and the postseason on the hardwood. Cross earned CVAC coach of the year honors six different times, including in 2017 when he was recognized as New York’s Class D coach of the year during Moriah’s state championship season. Cross finished his career after the 2023-2024 season when he led Moriah to an appearance in the Class C state semifinals. The Vikings would lose 67-59 in that game against the eventual state champion runners-up, the Haldane High School Blue Devils. Cross will receive his official induction at the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame in Glens Falls, NY, on Sunday, April 19.
