NEWARK, NJ — A large cloud of smoke was seen billowing from a fire in the Newark Airport area on Thursday.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey issued an alert about an off-site fire near Port Street in Newark at 2:46 p.m.
“Please exercise caution when travelling in and out of the port and surrounding roadways,” authorities said.
“Outer Port Street is closed in both directions due to [fire department] activity,” Port Authority officials announced in an update shortly afterwards.
All traffic is being rerouted through Doremus Avenue, authorities said.
Footage of the smoke has been circulating online, with several people sharing video clips and photos from nearby Newark Airport.
“Anyone know what’s happening?” an X user commented, adding that the smoke doesn’t seem to be coming from the airport itself – but somewhere nearby.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
