COLUMBUS, Ohio — Former Ohio State center Nick Mangold passed away Saturday night from complications of kidney disease, the New York Jets announced.

Mangold was 41.

Less than two weeks ago, Mangold announced through the New York Jets community that he was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease. Thus, he was in need of a kidney transplant.

Mangold is currently being considered for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

A Centerville native, he began his football career at Archbishop Alter in Kettering and enrolled at Ohio State beginning in 2002. He helped the team win the national title that season and began a storied career with the Buckeyes.

He was named a First-team All-American in 2005, as well as a Second-team All-Big Ten that same year. Mangold was regarded as one of the best centers in college football and ended his career with 33 starts as a Buckeye.

He was taken 29th overall in the 2006 NFL Draft by the New York Jets. There, he was one of the best interior linemen in the league.

He was a two-time First-team All-Pro selection (in 2009 and 2010) and was a Second-team All-Pro in 2011. He was selected to the Pro Bowl seven times and is a member of the New York Jets Ring of Honor.
