NORTH UMBERLAND — South Glens Falls firefighters saved a cat that was stranded on a sheet of ice in Gansevoort.

Assistant Fire Chief Tyler Corlew helped rescue the cat at around noon on Monday after Saratoga County Water Authority employees discovered it floating atop a sheet of ice in a manmade reservoir on its property.

Corlew and other rescuers used a yellow inflatable called a “banana boat” to reach the animal. The cat appeared to be in good health.

Rescuers brought the cat ashore, and Corlew said it showed no signs of aggression to firefighters, noting it did jump into the water at one point. Corlew is not sure how the cat managed to become trapped; a fence surrounds the body of water.

Corlew said the owner has not been identified and he was not quite sure what has since become of it. A post made by the fire company on social media indicates the cat was brought to a local veterinary clinic.
