The Flushing branch of Queens Public Library will close for approximately five weeks as it undergoes “critical safety improvements.”

The library on Main Street will shutter starting Monday, April 27 as workers replace smoke dampers in the fire alarm system and add a new fuel tank to the building’s generator, Queens Public Library said in a release.

The library’s auditorium will also be closed for the duration of the shutdown, starting Monday, March 30, as part of the fire alarm system work and for maintenance on the service elevator, the release said.

“Flushing Library, constructed nearly 30 years ago, is one of the busiest in our system. The time has come to make these necessary improvements, and we recognize the impact this temporary closure will have on our customers and staff,” Queens Public Library president and CEO Dennis Walcott said in a statement. “We are grateful for their patience as the Library and [the city’s Department of Design and Construction] work to ensure the building remains safe and fully functional.”

The library is expected to reopen in early June.

While it’s closed, Queens Public Library recommends heading to nearby branches, including McGoldrick Library, Mitchell-Linden Library and East Flushing Library.
